Abstract

Research shows that individuals select who they are prosocial towards, favoring certain individuals (e.g., in-group members) over others. However, no work has directly investigated whether people systematically differ in their selective prosociality, that is, whether personality traits can account for individual differences in selective prosociality. This project aims to test how well a set of personality traits can predict individual differences in selective prosociality. Specifically, we will look at (i) the extent to which stable individual differences in selective prosociality exist and can be accounted for by personality traits, (ii) how personality traits interact with situational features in explaining selective prosociality, and (iii) use these insights to inform us on how we may reduce selective prosociality and promote universal prosociality.
